From Corporate Career to Supporting Homelessness in Cambridge

Meet Megan Evans, Jimmy’s New Fundraising Assistant

Megan Evans has joined Jimmy’s as our new Fundraising Assistant — bringing energy, determination and a deep commitment to supporting people experiencing homelessness in Cambridge.

After building a successful corporate career — and climbing the ladder into a global leadership role — Megan made the bold decision to step into the charity sector to focus on work that creates direct, visible impact. At Jimmy’s, that means helping raise the vital funds that provide safe accommodation, specialist support and pathways out of rough sleeping for people in our city.

Why I Joined Jimmy’s – And How Your Support Changes Lives in Cambridge

Six months ago, I was spending my days upselling software solutions, tracking KPIs and moving between what felt like an endless stream of Zoom calls.

On paper, I had built the career I thought I wanted. After university, I moved to London, worked in recruitment, then thrived in Customer Success for six years — eventually managing a global team. It made sense. It was comfortable. It looked successful.

But something didn’t feel right.

My definition of success was changing.

Today, I measure success differently.

Success now looks like someone having a safe bed instead of a shop doorway.
It looks like someone receiving support for addiction.
It looks like someone taking their first step toward stable housing.

That’s why I joined Jimmy’s.

And it’s why your support matters more than you might realise.

Three Applications. One Clear Purpose.

In October 2024, I applied for a role at Jimmy’s — and didn’t get it.

I applied again — and didn’t get that one either.

Most people might have taken the hint. I didn’t.

I stayed in touch, took the advice I was given, and applied a third time. Because something about Jimmy’s stayed with me. The mission. The people. The work being done with those sleeping rough in Cambridge.

This wasn’t just a job opportunity. It was a chance to do something that actually mattered.

From Corporate Career to Homeless Charity in Cambridge

On paper, my career was thriving. But something was missing. I wanted my work to directly improve someone’s life.

When I learned more about homelessness in Cambridge, and the work Jimmy’s does to support people who are rough sleeping, I knew this was where I wanted to be.

Jimmy’s isn’t just emergency accommodation. It provides:

  • Safe, stable housing for people who have been sleeping rough
  • Nutritious meals and daily support
  • Specialist addiction and mental health support
  • Access to healthcare and practical services
  • Pathways into employment, training and independent living

This support changes lives.

But it only exists because people choose to donate.

What Your Donation Makes Possible

As a fundraiser at Jimmy’s, I see firsthand how donations turn into real, practical support.

Your gift could help provide:

  • A safe night off the streets
  • A hot meal and a warm space
  • One-to-one sessions with a keyworker
  • Addiction recovery support
  • Help securing long-term housing

In my first weeks, I’ve very much been in “sponge mode” — observing, learning and understanding the realities of homelessness more deeply. One powerful moment was completing training to administer Naloxone in the event of an opioid overdose. It was a sobering reminder that homelessness is complex — and sometimes life-threatening.

Because of supporters like you, the team at Jimmy’s is equipped to respond in those critical moments.

Because of you, someone gets another chance.

Bringing Corporate Skills to a Local Cause

Although I’ve stepped away from corporate life, I haven’t left those skills behind.

I’m helping give our Salesforce systems a much-needed glow up — automating processes and reducing manual duplication so we can spend less time on admin and more time supporting residents and engaging with donors.

I’ve also begun creating content to help tell Jimmy’s story more widely. Because the work happening here deserves to be heard — loudly.

Behind every donation, every campaign and every system improvement is one goal: more support for residents rebuilding their lives.

Behind Every Donation Is a Person

Fundraising isn’t about transactions. It’s about people.

It’s about someone who may have experienced trauma, relationship breakdown, addiction or financial crisis — and who now has a safe place to begin rebuilding their life.

When you donate to Jimmy’s, you are not just giving money to a homeless charity in Cambridge.

You are:

  • Funding safety
  • Funding recovery
  • Funding stability
  • Funding hope

You are helping someone move from rough sleeping to secure housing.

That is real impact.

Why I’m Staying

I came to Jimmy’s because I wanted purpose.

I’m staying because I see what your generosity makes possible every single day.

The team works tirelessly to support residents with compassion, dignity and patience. But we cannot do it alone.

If you have ever wondered whether your donation makes a difference — it does.

If you have ever questioned whether small gifts matter — they do.

If you have ever walked past someone sleeping rough in Cambridge and wished you could help — this is how.

Help Someone Move Forward Today

Homelessness in Cambridge is complex, but together we can ensure more people have access to safety, support and a pathway out of rough sleeping.
