During Trustees Week, Neil shares what inspired him to become a trustee at Jimmy’s Cambridge — and why the experience has been so rewarding.
When I took early retirement, I did so with the hope that I could use my experience and expertise for something more meaningful than corporate profit. I wanted to give my time and skills to a cause that truly mattered.
So, I began researching what it means to become a charity trustee — the legal responsibilities, the time commitment, and the impact trustees can make. Once I understood the role and felt confident it was something I wanted to pursue, I started asking myself a few important questions.
“What issues do I care most about?” → “Choosing a Cause as a Charity Trustee”
Becoming a trustee is a significant commitment, so I wanted to ensure I was supporting a cause I genuinely cared about — something that could make a real difference in people’s lives.
“How much time would I need to give?” → “Time Commitment as a Trustee”
I didn’t want to let anyone down, so I made sure I could meet the charity’s expectations and stay actively engaged. Most boards meet quarterly, which is manageable, and there are always extra ways to contribute if you have more time — as I do.
Does the charity’s mission fit my skills?
As someone who thinks strategically, I wanted to understand how the organisation plans and measures success. During my trustee interview, I paid close attention to how objectives are set and progress is tracked. I wanted to be sure my background could help in the areas that mattered most.
What about governance and oversight?
Training helped me understand my legal responsibilities, and it reinforced how crucial good governance is. Trustees play a vital role in ensuring transparency, financial health, and accountability so that a charity stays true to its mission.
“And the people?” → “The People and Community at Jimmy’s Cambridge”
For me, being a trustee is as much about the people as it is about the cause. Volunteering is a social experience — building relationships with fellow trustees, staff, and volunteers. I wanted to be part of a collaborative board, not a hands-off one, and I’m delighted to have found that at Jimmy’s.
After reflecting on these questions, I applied — and was thrilled to be invited to join the board of trustees at Jimmy’s Cambridge, a charity I’d long admired in my hometown and supported through donations. Jimmy’s does vital work supporting people experiencing homelessness and helping them rebuild their lives.
Being a trustee has been both interesting and deeply rewarding. It’s given me purpose, connection, and a way to make a tangible impact in my community.
If you’re thinking about becoming a trustee, my advice is simple: go for it. There’s a charity out there that needs your help — and it might just change your life too.
