Celebrating 30 Years of Supporting people experiencing homelessness

Jimmy’s was delighted to work with BBC Radio Cambridgeshire to mark 30 years of supporting people out of homelessness.

Last week we heard 30 voices of Jimmy’s to mark 30 years including residents, staff, volunteers, and ambassadors connected with the charity, and learnt how Jimmy’s continues to transform lives in Cambridge.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has helped Jimmy’s provide life-saving and life-changing support over the last three decades.

Hear from Residents, Staff, and Volunteers

Barry & Deb – From Homelessness to Hope

In this heartfelt conversation, former resident Barry shares his journey from homelessness to hope. After years on the streets of Cambridge, Barry found shelter, understanding, and a chance to rebuild his life with the support of Deb and the Jimmy’s team.

Together, Barry and Deb highlight the compassion and community at the heart of Jimmy’s — a place where everyone is given space to heal, grow, and move forward at their own pace.

Natasha Davies – The State of Homelessness in Cambridge

Jimmy’s CEO Natasha Davies discusses the current state of homelessness in Cambridgeshire, including the rise in rough sleeping, particularly among women. She highlights the broader challenges driving homelessness, such as the housing crisis, mental health pressures, and the difficulty of accessing support services.

Natasha explains how Jimmy’s provides more than shelter, offering personalised, compassionate support that helps people rebuild their lives. She also reflects on the financial and practical challenges of running a homelessness charity and the vital role of the Cambridgeshire community in keeping services running.

Matt & Iain – Helping Residents Move Into Their Own Homes

Matt and Iain discuss the final stage of support Jimmy’s offers before residents move into their own accommodation. Through pre-tenancy work, they help with:

  • Securing photo ID and benefits

  • Money management and budgeting

  • Cooking and life skills

  • Building confidence for independent living

With modular homes and tailored support, residents have the chance to thrive in a safe, stable environment. Matt and Iain emphasise Jimmy’s commitment to never leaving anyone without a home.

David – Finding Stability and Independence

451 resident David shares how Jimmy’s has provided stability, safety, and ongoing support after years of unsettled living and rough sleeping. With access to consistent care, mental health support, and practical assistance—including help with medication, ID, and connections in Cambridge—David has regained independence and set personal goals.

He describes Jimmy’s as a homely and safe environment, highlighting the importance of long-term support for people rebuilding their lives after homelessness.

Alison – Volunteer at Jimmy’s Cambridge

As part of Jimmy’s “30 Voices for 30 Years” series, volunteer Alison shares her personal story of loss and hope. After losing her son Robert, who struggled with mental health and addiction, Alison began volunteering at Jimmy’s to better understand the support available for people at risk of homelessness. She highlights how Jimmy’s provides stability, safety, and basic needs—a home, meals, and compassionate care—that help people start rebuilding their lives. Through her experience, Alison reflects on the importance of empathy, listening without judgment, and the life-changing impact of consistent support for those facing chaotic circumstances.
