Remembering Johnny: A Tribute to a Cherished Member of Jimmy’s Cambridge
Sadly, at Jimmy’s, we recently lost one of our big characters – someone who touched the hearts of many of our staff and residents. His name was Johnny, and this is our tribute to him.
Johnny will be remembered as a larger-than-life character – always chatty, friendly, and ready to make people laugh. He had a warmth and energy that lit up any room he walked into. Whether he was cracking jokes, sharing stories, or showing off his latest creative idea, Johnny had a way of bringing people together.
We’ll never forget seeing him with his little dog, Nellie, by his side, her tiny nails painted to perfection – one staff member even joked that Nellie had better nails than she did! When we received a donation of Lush products, he was absolutely in his element, diving into the box with pure joy. That was Johnny all over – enthusiastic, expressive, and unapologetically himself.

Johnny had a brilliant sense of humour. During a mindfulness session, he once decided to turn it into a ballet performance – leaping gracefully across the day room before attempting the splits… and then getting stuck on the floor, shocked to find he needed a staff member’s help to get back up again!
After another session, he became convinced he could communicate with dolphins and whales and jokingly made whale and dolphin noises while trying to talk to other residents – who had no idea what he was doing!
Johnny also had a generous heart. He could often be found laughing so hard while decorating cupcakes with our cook, Teresa, that tears rolled down their faces. He was also the only person we know who used his hairdressing skills to trim the plants and hedges – insisting they should look perfectly symmetrical!
Hairdressing Was His Passion
His face would light up whenever he was cutting someone’s hair. He loved making people feel their best, and that same care extended to everyone around him – always checking in to make sure staff and residents were okay.
We’ll always remember his Halloween costume – an outfit he made himself, inspired by Chris’s (451 Team Leader’s) dog. He looked absolutely fabulous – just typical Johnny.

Memories That Make Us Smile
- Spending hours decorating Christmas trees and creating the biggest “Merry Christmas” sign you’ve ever seen out of cardboard boxes and wrapping paper, covered in bows.
- The evening he kept dozing off in the lounge, waking up just enough to ask if there was any key lime pie – only to miss his mouth completely when we gave him some!
- Showing he cared in his own unique way, whether making cupcakes for staff or giving cigarette papers to residents.
Johnny’s time at Jimmy’s was filled with laughter, creativity, and kindness. He may have only been with some of us for a short while, but he made a lasting impact. His humour, compassion, and spark will not be forgotten.
He was a unique individual, endlessly creative and deeply caring toward those around him. His aura was energetic and buoyant, and he would always greet and talk to staff with a smile on his face.
Thank You, Johnny
Johnny – thank you for the memories, the laughter, and the light you brought into our lives. You will be deeply missed, and fondly remembered by all of us at Jimmy’s.
