Payroll giving

Payroll Giving is a unique, tax-effective way for an employee to give a regular or one-off amount direct from their income (monthly or weekly) to charity, and once set up, no further effort is required.

This method of donating is extremely important to Jimmy’s because it provides a regular, reliable long-term source of income and as the tax relief is included in the donation we do not have to spend time reclaiming the tax on donations. If your firm does not participate in a Payroll Giving scheme try and encourage them to implement one. There are many benefits as it demonstrates that your employer is committed to working in partnership with its staff and the local community and there are numerous public relations opportunities. Stakeholders and customers like to see companies making a contribution to the community. Many employers view Payroll Giving as a benefit they can offer to their staff at little or no cost to themselves.

When you donate money to a cause in the normal way you are giving out of your taxed income. When you choose Payroll Giving your donation is taken from your pay before tax is deducted. Simply put, Jimmy’s gets a bigger donation. The pledged amount is deducted after National Insurance Contributions are calculated but before PAYE tax is deducted.

The donation is therefore tax free for the donor and the tax the donor would have paid goes to the charity instead. A monthly gift of £10.00 for example costs a basic rate taxpayer only £8.00, since the donation comes from your gross pay before tax. Over 20 million people are paid by PAYE, so the potential for expanding Payroll Giving is enormous for Jimmy’s. The amount you pledge will be deducted from your salary while you remain in employment with that employer. You don’t have to do anything more unless you decide to increase or stop payments.

How does it work?

Step 1: Simply ask your payroll department to deduct regular charitable donations from your gross pay (providing your employer offers Payroll Giving). Many major employers already offer Payroll Giving schemes.

Step 2: Your employer passes the money to an approved Payroll Giving agency which will distribute it to Jimmy’s.

Share Giving

The idea of giving shares to charity is not new, but since 6 April 2000 there have been new tax incentives to make it even more attractive and there are other reasons why giving shares might appeal to you.

Do you hold windfall shares as a result of a privatisation or demutualisation that are effectively gathering dust, making little difference to you? They could make a big difference to Jimmy’s. Or maybe you own very small parcels of shares, perhaps as the result of an inheritance, which you regard as a bit of a nuisance as they generate more paperwork than income. These could be turned into something of real value to others if you give them to Jimmy’s. Twelve million people own shares in the UK, worth a staggering £200 billion. If only a tiny fraction of these shares were donated to Jimmy’s imagine what a difference it could make!

Donating shares to charity is easier than you think. Depending on how the shares are held you might have to fill out a stock transfer form or simply arrange for a transfer from your nominee account straight to Jimmy’s.

To give shares to Jimmys, contact the registrars of the company in which you have shares and ask for a transfer form.  Their details will be on your share certificate and on your dividend vouchers. Complete the transfer form which will take the shares out of your name and put them into Jimmy’s name. The registrars will be able to answer any questions about filling in the form

Legacies

By leaving a legacy to Jimmy’s Night Shelter in your will, you can continue to give us the means to provide vital support for our guests, in many different fields, whatever the individual need. While enabling you to plan your giving with the advantage of relief from inheritance tax, it also helps us to plan ahead financially.

In giving to Jimmy’s in this way, you will be leaving a legacy of hope and love for those who need it most. Your will is your personal way of saying what is important to you. It is a way of protecting your family and continuing to support the aspects of homelessness that concern you most.

Jimmy’s advises that anyone making or updating a Will to get in touch with a practising solicitor to help you do this.
