Volunteer shifts
At Jimmy’s Night Shelter we offer our volunteers breakfast, evening and overnight shifts, working with guests alongside our project team. On these shifts, our volunteers help with serving food, making beds, cleaning, laundry, sorting donations – so much help is needed.
We are always in need of volunteers, and below is a little more information about the shifts we operate:
-
Evening shift – 6.30 to 9.30: these shifts involve serving food, and doing a range of general light cleaning eg clean cooker after dinner, wipe down tea table, washing up, plus one ‘particular’ cleaning job per shift eg cleaning fire shutter or bookcase or extraction hood, which is a different task each night. There are more opportunities to talk to the residents, and get involved with eg helping people out with PC use, playing cards, chess. Meals & snacks are available for volunteers.
-
Overnight shift – 10.00pm until 7.00am: in the early part of this shift, cleaning throughout the shelter is undertaken, including bathrooms/toilets, outside steps and lounge. Often this shift is very busy between 10.30pm and 12.30am, and then is usually much quieter, when the volunteers are able to get some sleep in the lounge (on settees, duvets, blankets etc provided). Guests are expected to be in bed by 12.30pm. Overnight it may appear v quiet, with little activity expected from the volunteer, but a key role is ‘being there’ in case assistance is needed.
We also have opportunities if you have daytime hours to spare, to help with collecting donations, answering phones, administration, light cleaning, DIY; whatever the skill or interest that you have, we’re sure you can help!
